Watch an interview with Shallon in June 2004
Why Shallon chose to teach...
A strong passion to teach and heal others developed early in
Shallon's life.
As a small child, Shallon demonstrated a natural interest in
creative play games such as “Teacher" and "Doctor".
Which at the age of 12 with the exposure to a chiropractor and
Anthroposophical doctor, developed into a real interest in healing
through chiropractic, acupressure, and diet. Through reading books
and testing techniques on her family, Shallon learned the basics of
the body's structure and energy systems. Later, with the exposure to
her nieces, nephews, and neighboring kids, a joyous impetus to work
with children formed.
At the age of 14, Shallon experienced a shift in reality when she
experienced an almost fatal cerebral hemorrhage. Through a change in
usage of the brain, a new awareness on how brain functions affect
daily life evolved. However, along with this shift she realized that
teaching was in fact her calling.
In 2005, Shallon completed a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education
with a Reading major and a Visual Art minor through Eastern
Washington University. In 2008, after two years of attending a cohort
program through Lesley University and teaching kindergarten in the
Port Angeles School District, she earned a Master of Arts in
Education degree in 'Integrated Learning through the Arts'. 'The
Arts' had always been a powerful factor in her life, but new training
evoked a strong need to spread the wisdom of the physical, mental,
emotional and spiritual potential and benefits to others.
Shallon's passion for 'The Arts'...
Born into a family of artist, Shallon grew up in an atmosphere
bursting with creative energy. Her mother, a fine artist, frequently
set her up with paints, clay, and other visual art activities.
Throughout elementary school, she won several art contest. Her
father, a park ranger and photographer, frequently relocated which
also gave a unique exposure to a variety of artistic and athletic
experiences. For instance while living in Gardnerville, NV at the age
of eight, she spent two years participating in ballet, tap, and jazz
dance. Occasional performances on stage at Caesar's Palace, one of
Lake Tahoe's resort casinos, took place in front of thousands of
viewers during this time. Shallon also explored how her body moves
during two years of gymnastics and swim team. At the age of 11, she
played clarinet in the middle school band which continued until soon
after her cerebral hemorrhage where she once again studied visual art
as well as explored teaching herself how to play the guitar.
Now, as the worlds of Art and Education in Shallon's life blend
together, Educate
By Heart
is born. Much compassion and joy is put into helping children and
adults develop understanding, self awareness, and balance in their
personal and academic life.
Outside the classroom, Shallon enjoys yoga, outdoor activities,
reading, learning new things and of course, any and all of 'The
Arts'.
